Genetic testing in Pregnancy with NIPS

NIPS (Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening) is offered to pregnant women at 10 weeks + 0 days gestation.  Genetic testing is important to consider as it can allow for informed choice as to how to proceed with pregnancy.  This test has a high detection rate for Trisomy 21, but also screens for Trisomy 18 and 23.  With NIPS, there is no harm to the fetus and it can determine the fetal sex early in pregnancy.

Screening test that tests for:

  • Trisomy 21, 18, 13
  • Fetal sex
  • Additional micro-deletions if requested (not recommended unless you have a personal or family history of genetic abnormalities).

When to complete test:

  • Anytime after 10 weeks + 0 days gestation
  • Testing must be completed between Monday and Wednesday morning. Test kits are required to be sent out by Wednesday afternoon to be received by Invitae before sample is compromised.

How to prepare for blood draw:

  • Book at blood draw appointment by calling our clinic (we require a 20-minute appointment – this cost can be submitted to extend benefits under naturopathy).
  • Have something to eat and drink prior to appointment. Notify clinic if veins are difficult or you have had adverse effects to blood draws in the past.

Results:

  • Your blood sample will be sent to Invitae by Serenity Health.  Invitae will contact you to collect payment (the clinic does not have any association to this payment).
  • Results of NIPS testing will be sent to your primary care provider to review the results once received by Serenity Health. These results can be shared with you by your primary care provider after the results have been discussed to ensure you have a qualified professional to help interpret your results.

What is the difference between NIPS and NIPT?

  • These terms can be used interchangeably. NIPS acronym contains an “s” for Screening, NIPT contains a “t” for Testing.

Why complete testing through Invitae instead of Life Labs?

  • Testing through Invitae can save on the cost of testing and allows for part of the cost to be submitted to health insurance for coverage.
